5 Building Blocks for Your Mobile Marketing Strategy

Plus: Top 10 digital-marketing trends for 2012; 99 million tablets to ship in 2012; marketers to raise 2012 online video ad budgets; and more

5 keys to building a mobile marketing strategy:Nearly 50 percent of consumers use their mobile phones for shopping activities, ranging from researching prices to downloading coupons to taking product photos. And you say you don't have a mobile marketing strategy? Here are five building blocks to help you get on track.

Top 10 digital-marketing trends for 2012: Give your eyes a rest and watch this slide show that covers CMO.com's top 10 online trends for next year. Sure, it includes the usual suspects such as social media and ROI metrics, but there are some surprises, too.

2012 tablet shipments outpace original projections: 99 million tablets are projected to ship in 2012, a jump of 55 percent over 2011, says investment banker JP Morgan, which revised earlier forecasts of 70 million to 80 million shipments. Apple is expected to ship 45.5 million iPads in 2012 (including a new model), representing 46% of the market. Amazon predicts it will ship 20 million of Kindle tablets. 2012 tablet shipments could go even higher if Microsoft launches its Windows 8 tablet in the second half of the year.

Marketers will increase online video ad budgets in 2012: In a Break Media survey of 300 ad and marketing decision-makers, two-thirds said they'll increase funding for online video advertising next year, with 32% of them shifting funds from their TV budgets to do so. This and other recent studies show that online video ads will continue to grow despite concerns over a lack of standard metrics and the difficulty of measuring ROI.

Consumers spend more time on mobile than print media: The average time spent each day on mobile phones increased 30% in 2011 to 65 minutes, eclipsing the 44 minutes spent reading print magazines and newspapers combined. Last year, the mobile and print metrics were equal at about 50 minutes. The boob tube still reigns as media champ. While Internet time in 2011 increased 7.7% to two hours, 47 minutes, TV viewing (live and recorded) increased by 10 minutes to 4 hours and 34 minutes a day.
